A sign for vengeance, and for justice, and for victory.

When his friend Jack announces that he has found a relic of the lost continent of Atlantis, Henry Thorpe dismisses it as an empty fancy. Yet half-way through their voyage from the Cambridge of Isaac Newton to the New World, their ship is suddenly transported to an unknown shore, just in time to rescue a young maiden from being sacrificed to a sea-serpent. Barely escaping, they sail with Cora to the port-city of Marna, where they will be safe from her enemy, Larth Porsena, the powerful Grand Admiral of the Empire of Avra. Or so they think.

As Cora's father and brother steer through the treacherous politics of the Avrian senate, Henry struggles to understand where they have been transported, and why. His unexpected election to a fellowship in the oldest of Marna's nine colleges seems to present the perfect opportunity to find the answers he seeks in the college's library. But unbeknownst to him, both senators and scholars are grappling with an older and more terrible secret: the oracle of the Sibyl of Tamandus, an ancient prophecy that foretells the end of the age and the victory of Avra over the world.
